About

The place, in context

Menjangan means deer, and the name is literal. Javan rusa stags once swam almost two kilometres of open strait to graze the island's scrub, and fishermen named the place after them — Pulau Menjangan on Indonesian charts. Snorkeling Banyuwangi Menjangan Island routes still trace that crossing in reverse, running west from the Java Strait into Balinese water. The island itself is uninhabited. No hotel has ever been built on it. It sits inside West Bali National Park, gazetted in 1941 as a reserve and upgraded to national park status in 1984. The park's reputation was built on two rarities. The Bali starling, down to fewer than ten wild birds in the early 2000s, survives in the dry forest behind the beaches. Below the waterline, the reef shelf ends abruptly: a vertical drop-off falls past sixty metres within a few boat lengths of shore. Two wrecks anchor the dive map. The Anchor Wreck, a steel hull on the island's north-west corner, lies in twenty-five to forty-five metres and is usually dated to the early twentieth century. Closer in, a submerged Ganesha statue placed at Gili Kencana has become the reef's most recognised figure. Bali Barat snorkeling sites are mapped around these two features. Tabuhan Island supplies the other half of the story. A two-hectare sandbar in the Bali Strait off Banyuwangi's Bangsring coast, it is ringed by shallow hard coral and used as a staging point for Snorkeling Banyuwangi Menjangan Island tours that leave the Javanese shore. Combined Tabuhan and Menjangan itineraries treat the two islands as one reef system, which is roughly what they are: the same current that feeds Bangsring's artificial reef nursery runs on toward the park boundary. Entry to the national park carries a 200,000 IDR conservation fee per person on weekdays, 300,000 IDR on weekends and holidays. What endures here is scale rather than ornament. Pura Gili Kencana stands on the ridge above the landing, a working Hindu temple on an island with no residents. Rangers patrol the mangrove edge, and the sea-turtle hatchery at Pemuteran lies twenty minutes east by boat. Demand for Snorkeling Banyuwangi Menjangan Island tickets has climbed steadily since the Pemuteran and Bangsring harbours were formalised, which is why the reef now runs on moorings, briefings, and a counted number of hulls per site. The deer still swim. Fewer people watch them do it.

"The island has no residents, and still it has a temple on its ridge."
Your experience

What a tour day looks like

A step-by-step walkthrough of the visit — what you'll see, how long each stage takes, and the details that matter.

You leave the Bangsring or Pemuteran jetty while the water is still flat, inside the 07:00–10:00 window when visibility holds and the afternoon wind has not started. The outrigger runs low and loud. Spray comes over the gunwale for the first ten minutes, then the sea goes glassy and you watch the bottom shelve away beneath the hull. Tabuhan arrives first on the combined itineraries: a white sandbar you can walk end to end in four minutes, coral starting a few strokes off the beach. You test your mask here. The crew hands out fins, checks the strap, points to the current line. Then the crossing to Menjangan. You slip in over the reef flat and kick toward the edge, and the floor simply stops — a wall dropping into blue, sea fans at arm's length, a school of fusiliers turning in formation below your feet. You surface, breathe, go back down. Somewhere above you the temple roof shows through the trees on the ridge. Lunch comes on the boat or back at Pemuteran, depending on which Snorkeling Banyuwangi Menjangan Island tour you joined. By early afternoon the chop builds and the engine turns for home. You come back salted, sunburnt on the backs of the knees, and quieter than you left.
